When I retired in December 2024 from editing the PPD Club, after 29 years, I was determined to follow up on a heap of ideas I had filed away in my ‘little black book’ – systems, form queries, staking plans and so on. These were, to me, important signposts for my new life in retirement.

Determined to stay in ‘the great game’ I spent several months testing various ideas. There were promising successes.

I began investigating FORM. This is an intricate beast, made up of hundreds of ‘threads’ that weave in and out and around each horse and all the horses that raced against him or her, and from there the web spreads as each horse embarks on its own trajectory to find a ‘true’ level in the overall form picture.

So many threads to consider – breeding, age, career record, best trips, best performances on wet ground, official ratings, weights, finish positions, barriers, tracks, dates of running, synthetic track performances, record against rivals (win or lose?), luck or not in running, distance switches, effect of rest periods (spelling), jockey and trainer influences, betting support and so on.

Mind-boggling, really. But to the credit of punters in this demanding scenario we somehow manage to get our minds around it on a daily basis though not always with any great luck or efficiency.

How, I thought, is it possible to produce something successful from such a grab-bag of information? I worked my way through the different avenues of the form book. The answer came suddenly. The cobwebs were torn away... Eureka!
