In February 2001 Practical Punting Monthly published for the first time The Buccaneer method.

To explain it simply:

The Buccaneer is a points-rating method of determining selections in chosen races. It works because it is based on fundamental form principles ... plus much commonsense.

The rules take into account recent form, fitness and many other vital factors of each horse’s past performances. It requires some subjective judgement but basically it is a mechanical type system aimed at producing the best horses in each selected race.

It is set out in a way that allows the user to track down the key prospects and it finally sets out the top 4 chosen contenders. The winner will often come from this group.

Form plays a major role in The Buccaneer. In Martin Dowling’s 2001 Practical Punting article he wrote the following advice:

1. Good recent form plus the best overall form equals the race favourite.
2. Good recent form usually indicates full fitness.
3. No recent form means a probable loser, subject to scrutiny to discover the reasons for the poor form.

Winners, then, cannot be found on one factor alone. Every factor is relative to other factors, so we have plus and minus signs. For example, a horse may be fit, have a weight advantage and a good jockey but all these advantages might well be cancelled out by a bad barrier draw, or racing at the wrong distance or on going it cannot handle.

Using The Buccaneer’s rules, and the finely tuned analytical ability of Martin Dowling, we will sort out which of the runners in a race are what we call the “commonsense” runners, the horses that have done what it takes to indicate they are going to be right there fighting out the finish.

The top four horses are the ones on which you will need to concentrate.

The top selection will not always win (surprise, surprise!) but I think you can be rest assured that the other top contenders will be there doing their best to put the nose down when the top contender misses out.
